This is a medical emergency. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Keep the person completely still and do not allow them to walk.

  1. Keep the person still
Lie the person down and reassure them. Movement can increase the spread of venom, so keeping them still is the priority.
  2. Apply pressure over the bite or sting
Place the Medstock TraumaFix Compression Bandage directly over the suspected bite or sting site and wrap firmly.
  3. Bandage the entire limb
Continue wrapping towards the fingers or toes, then wrap back up the limb as far as possible. Overlap each layer by approximately half the width of the bandage.
  4. Check the tension
Stretch the bandage until the printed rectangles become squares. This indicates firm, even pressure. The bandage should be firm but must never be used as a tourniquet.
  5. Secure and immobilise
Secure the bandage using the built-in soft closure. Splint the limb to prevent movement, including the joints above and below the bite or sting.
  6. Record the time
Record the approximate time of the bite or sting and when the bandage was applied. If the location is known, mark it on the outside of the bandage.
  7. Wait for emergency assistance
Keep the person lying down, still and under constant observation. Do not remove or loosen the bandage unless instructed by emergency services or a healthcare professional.

Never Do the Following

  • Do not wash or clean the bite or sting site.
  • Do not cut the area or attempt to suck out venom.
  • Do not apply an arterial tourniquet.
  • Do not allow the person to stand or walk.
  • Do not attempt to catch or kill the animal.
  • Do not remove the bandage after application.

If the person becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, begin CPR immediately.

Pressure immobilisation is not recommended for every bite or sting, including redback and other non-funnel-web spider bites, jellyfish stings, fish stings, or stings from scorpions and centipedes.

This guide does not replace accredited first-aid training or professional medical advice.

  • Do not use as an arterial tourniquet or apply so tightly that blood circulation is cut off
  • Use only as directed when applying the pressure immobilisation technique to an affected limb
  • Once applied, do not remove or loosen the bandage unless directed by emergency services or a healthcare professional
  • Do not use if there is a known allergy or sensitivity to any of the bandage materials
  • The tension indicator is an application guide only and does not replace accredited first-aid training or professional medical advice
